"RAE – Turning of Nutrient Losses into Profits” –project

RAE-project is carried out in collaboration with Savonia University of Applied Sciences, MTT (Agrifood Research Finland), ProAgria Advisory Centres of North Savo, North Karelia and South Savo, Finnish Environment Institute and Water Protection Association of Savo-Karelia. The project will be implemented during June 2011 – December 2014.

Over half of the phosphorus and nitrogen load of Finnish watercourses is coming from agriculture. Also prices of the artificial fertilizers has been rising during the past years. Therefore, it is important that the farms will concentrate in production methods that are efficient, but also more environmentally friendly.

RAE will focus on to enhance efficient use of manure on dairy farms. RAE will gather, test and disseminate information on the best practices in the manure use and protection of watercourses in agricultural sector. Main topics of the research are:

  • manure processing methods and maintenance of nutrients (for example biogas processing, addition of gypsum to the manure etc.)
  • grass collecting before winter and effects on nutrient leaches (in Eastern Finland climate)
  • the best ploughing depth in phosphorus rich soils
  • plant diagnostics
  • efficiency of wetlands to retain nutrients
  • use of biochar on grasslands
  • efficiency of ditch filters
  • other methods

The results and findings from the research will be disseminated to the farms by advisory visits, informative meetings, demonstrative events, guidebooks etc.
